Of course Chinese media claims this. It gave them a perfect chance for a propaganda attack. But...
The Afghans wouldn't defend Afghanistan. I'm betting the Taiwanese will defend Taiwan.
The US lost how many lives in Afghanistan? And how many so far defending Taiwan? The US isn't tired of helping Taiwan in the way they were tired of Afghanistan.
And, China better be careful what they wish for. If I were Taiwan, and I believed what China's press is saying, I'd be developing nukes. That really might not be China's desired outcome...
Nobody stepped forward when the Chinese steamrollered Hong Kong. Nobody is stepping forward as they continue to facilitate the travesty that is North Korea. Nobody is stepping forward knowing they're running concentration camps. You expect the US to jump at China for the sake of a small island? We did nothing to stop the annexation of the Crimean peninsula, BTW.
I could imagine US intervention if one of two things happened - 1) Japan dove in head first to protect (seize) the island, and the US dove in after to support Japan; 2) the developed nations saw a play where they could carve up mainland China for themselves, or at least topple the CCP.
Either of those scenarios are such high-cost roads for the US to travel down, especially when faith in our leadership is at an all-time low (at least in my lifetime). It's hard to watch these idiots attempt to talk with authority when you know they're incompetent pretentious assholes, trying and failing to gaslight the public. Would you want your kids going overseas to war with China under present leadership of the US military? Would you have any confidence that such a campaign would be executed well?
Sorry, that was the outside voice. Just frustrating to have been watching this disintegration for most of my lifetime.
US doesn't have the money or internal stability to defend Taiwan anymore. Defending Taiwan means risking WWIII and the average American couldn't even point it out on a map and doesn't understand why it's important at all
hell, the pandemic showed our supply chain is so jacked up that we couldn't even handle a minor disruption of goods from China. How would the civilian population that is already a tinderbox due to politics and the pandemic going to react to shortages and price increases?
this isn't the 30s or 40s, the US isn't capable of fighting an all out war anymore
They spent 20 years in Afghanistan trying to get the country to stand on its feet but ultimately Pakistan's terror machine had unlimited terror resources to draw on (millions of illiterate and poor and brainwashed young men) to continue a slow burn fight. Do I think Biden fucked up, yeah but I don't care and I'm glad we're getting the fuck out of that shit hole.
Would they defend Taiwan? Probably not but it would cost the Chinese dearly.
Biden fucked up in the execution - leaving equipment and (American) civilians on the ground as the soldiers left, being sure to load military dogs on the planes while Afghani's fell from the landing gear. It's not the move out of Afghanistan that people are appalled by, it's the manner in which it was done. Be at least as hard on Biden for this as you would if Trump was overseeing such a shitshow, even ignoring that Biden was supposed to be the wise, steady hand on the tiller. This was a reckless cock-up by any measure. If there was a worse way to get out of Afghanistan, I have trouble imagining it. Napalming the crowds on the way out, maybe?
Frankly i don't expect much greatness from Biden. Back in March he responded to Texas lifting the mask mandate, by saying it was Neanderthal thinking. And the rest is history.
If he could end the War on Drugs that would be something though, although i suspect there are too many interests in law enforcement agencies to let that happen.
