There's age bias all the time, I'm not sure why people try to say otherwise: given the choice between hiring a twenty-something and a 50-something for a given position, and a similar skillset (especially easy to do in technology since skillsets get out dated so quick), most will hire the younger person. It's human nature to not be influenced like this.

Also, what most people here need to remember, too, is that not everyone's career path is going to put them on a trajectory to becoming CTO. The number of CTO/executive/engineering directors, etc. is quite small compared to the rank and file programmer positions.

I think someone else mentioned this, but sales people have it even rougher than software engineers.
