Ask HN: Does ChatGPT Browser mode use an automated browser? (chat.openai.com)

When using the new Browsing mode on ChatGPTA, it seems to use some sort of headless browser. Anyone know exactly what they use?

I don't get why they don't use bing search API, or make some other arrangement with M$ to access their search index?

It seems like a very inefficient way for a computer to perform millions of web searches. And it's certainly extremely flaky to use.

I presume it uses the bing search API to fetch the links, why do you think it doesn't?

And then after that it has to fetch and parse the content somehow.

In the link it claims to be clicking and reading and scrolling. And it fails often enough that I believe it.

That's just a human touch, on the iOS app it says it's tapping. But you're right, it's a bad look when it fails so much.

Click the Finished Browsing drop down link to see it's browsing history.
