The images in the article are not optimized, so the comparisons are not meaningful.

For example, my-dog-dithered.png which uses only black and white is stored as 4x8 bpp instead of 1bpp. Running it through optipng halves the size.



That seems odd to me. Isn't PNG compression based on a LZW-type algorithm, making the bit count of the inputs irrelevant as long as you're only using two distinct values?
