Basically, I find VR mildly interesting, and will put significant effort into it if and when I'm funded for that :)

Sure, VR doesn't have mostly any serious applications. Some very special games and "virtual camp fires" is all I can think of.

But AR has significant serious applications!

I could imagine that there are quite some overlaps when it comes to parts of the core technology though, for example regarding VR / AR GUIs.
