Thats a common misconception and ignorance of western world in action. Just like they call their native Americans as Indians. And when they say "world", they really mean the North American continent. When they say immigrants, they mean third world people, and when they say expats, its first world country citizens.

These misconceptions will change once the solipsistic cloud over the western world clears out.

So you think we Europeans mean the North American continent when we say "world"? Or is Europe not part of the western world?

I understand the air of superiority in your comment. You can keep that to yourself and go back to your colonial days. By the way, what you think about this ? Isnt it stupid to call it a world series ? As a European, will you call it the world series ?

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Series

Its funny to see if a first world country citizen moves to another country he is called an Expat and the third world citizens are called immigrants.

A common misconception. If you have given up your US citizenship, you are an immigrant. Not an expat.

People have a reason to make that distinction. You are not bound to see humanitarian aid for expats anytime soon.

Also, i dont think it's a term reserved for westerners. What do you call a rich saudi who currently lives in miami, an immigrant?

Bill to issue greencards based on a points based system, much like Canada Express entry. The draft of the bill is here

Stripe is US only and very bad charge back fees and worst dispute resolution. After losing a lot of money by using Stripe as a small time side projector, I recommend using PayPal, they have all that Stripe provides. I don't understand why people go behind Stripe. Because Stripe is cool ? Paypal has everything Stripe has plus zero dispute fees. Stripe has 15$ fees. You will feel the burn when you have lot of disputes which are common. Stripe has statistically favoured customers in disputes as far as my sales. So I ditched Stripe way back. Let Stripe be equal to PayPal. Otherwise using Stripe do not give you much advantage.

Edit: Stripe is not US only, but the countries that they support is very limited. Not recommended if your product has worldwide customers.

Stripe is not US only, it's available in 25 countries: https://stripe.com/global

It was when I tried it way back. Didnt care to check back. My customers are from everywhere around the world. Not only from those petty list of countries that Stripe supports. I cant tell them, sorry you cannot buy my product because the payment processor dont support your country. What a turn off it will be for the customers.

Those 25 countries are where to _seller_ can be based. Stripe allows purchases from over 135 countries.

https://stripe.com/docs/currencies#charge-currencies

Don't you understand ? Using Paypal anyone can sell from anywhere in the world. Why are you still insisting on Stripe ? "Stripe allows purchases from over 135 countries". I want my product to be sold all over the world. Stripe don't do that. Stripe has a good API than Paypal and it ends there. I ditched Stripe for Paypal and I never looked back, sales from everywhere in the world, rather than customer's emailing me..."It says cannot accept my card"

Well I have the same problems with Paypal that you have with Stripe. Its also not true that you can use Paypal everywhere.

As a German citizen I cannot use Subscriptions with Paypal for my company for example.

Thats great. But why is this on hackernews ? Whats the relevance ? There is a single page linked to this.

It's an acquisition/acquihire

IIT grads get funded to study using taxpayers money in India and they migrate to the US. There is no use for the country funding them with high quality education. We should stop funding IITs with tax payers money which is of no benefit to the people or the country. India's brain drain.

Interesting point. The same could be said about K-12 education (in the US), where it's funded by local communities through property taxes but the grads often pick up and move to cities like NYC and SF. However, providing a differing education to those who are gifted has low marginal costs - AP teachers are paid the same amount, and teachers will often take less pay to work with motivated students. Obviously, students (and adults) who fall from the cracks may become dependent on the local communities, so there is high ROI for the taxpayer there as well.

Broadly speaking and if it can be done effectively, funding education on a higher municipal level makes more sense as it's less likely recipients will take their education elsewhere.

The proportion of IIT graduates leaving India has significantly decreased over the years. Last year just 200 went abroad.

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mumbai/indias-brain-...

The article is highly misleading. Only 200 students got job offers from international companies in on campus placements.

The majority that head out go for graduate education. The statistic doesn't take them into consideration.

The 200 is absolutely bogus.

Unfortunately for the US, proposed revisions to immigration policy may be sending more of that brain drain back.

Also, in general, more public funding for education does pay for itself in the long run, though I'm not sure how that's adjusted for net emigration.

(Edit: corrected fat fingered typo.)

So true. I got my CS degree at a top school in US, I work at a good startup and get paid very well. But I am so disillusioned with the United States, I feel like going back to India is much better than being an H1B slave.

While it is indeed a problem that most graduates of IIT leave India, the solution is most certainly not to terminate its funding. There can be other mechanisms put in place, like owing the govt. sponsored fees if the worker decides to leave the country and such.

I am happy to leave Facebook. But what will I tell the US govt if they ask for my social media ? I frequently fly in & out of US and not a citizen.

FYI, US is not the only country which have cars. Do not peg everything with whats in US. Its pure solipsism. The demand for oil will rise from developing nations in the near future. Rise of Tesla ? Everywhere else in the world, we havent heard of Tesla. If a company makes it big in the US market, it doesnt mean its a success everywhere else.

Person of color here. Everyone else have to struggle a bit more. I am not automatically privileged like the whites are born into. I changed my name in the resume to a white name just for a test and surprisingly got more interview requests.

Call center in India ? But but but ... you guys said Indians are taking jobs away from the US. Why cant business be profitable with call center in the US itself. Greedy corps wants profits, outsource it and then innocent Indian employees gets the flak for it. Just wow !
