Thanks for the suggestion. H.264 Baseline/High profile patents are largely expiring between 2027–2028, with a few stragglers potentially lasting until 2030. We're tracking this closely — once the patent landscape is clear, we plan to offer H.264/H.265 as an optional feature. In the meantime, AV1 matches or exceeds H.265 in compression efficiency, so for greenfield projects there's little reason to reach for the legacy codecs.

problem is users will still have files in mp4+h264 combo we cannot dictate that but i think i can workaround that by using system default codecs via other library.

interesting i am trying to build one too but rejected duckdb because of large size, i guess i will have to give in and use it at some point of time.

mine got lot of upvotes and huge traffic but it died after few days. I think it has more to do with novelty of idea rather than commercial interest.

My project[1] got some love on HN though never made it to frontage about a year ago. It also got unexpectedly popular on twitter. Its simple project and not particularly great ui either but somehow it clicked. My other projects which i thought were more useful never got any traction. It seems novel idea was what caught people's attention. one year later though it hardly gets any traffic. Also with improved LLM's it has become trivial to replicate them.
