That’s you, cool no problem I would like chatting with you just to catch a breath.

But there is Mallory who will tell on everyone on the team some dirty stuff.

There is Karen that is trying to undermine Louise because she has bigger boobs than her - yeah she won’t tell it outright but each one on one she would try to indicate she is not doing great job.

There is Henry who thinks he is a fucking rockstar genius implementing features 10X faster than all the pleb and demands rise every freaking one on one but you know that every feature he did had to be scrapped and replaced.

Oh did I mention you cannot just fire them but you have to kind of like of make them continue working. Maybe you can shift someone to other projects, maybe after 3 months or 6 months of documenting them being an asshole you can fire them.

Obviously you can’t offend any of them because ten you will get fired much faster.

I am always baffled by people who blame developers. Like some mid dev or junior would calling shots what stack should be used for project.

You'd be surprised, then. Some managers don't know squat. I rolled onto a project once and found that an entire application was being delivered as a 300MB ActiveX control, to run in a browser because that was cool and "cutting-edge" at the time.

Looking at the code, I found it was using UI elements for data storage and other such nonsense. A colleague and I had to tell the manager that the entire thing had to be rewritten. I'm not sure he actually went pale, but that's how I remember it.

It is EXACTLY the type of people that are hired to make decisions, because of either nepotism or impressing with portfolio filled with overcomplicated, 3.js frontpages.

When you give the project to a bunch of junior devs they necessarily decide the stack.

Will save you some tokens: „write code like Linus Torvalds” - model should have all his swearing included in training data.

instant access to answers for my specific problems, without judgment

For me that’s killer feature, even if we don’t achieve AGI at least we got good enough „something that will google it for me”.

It is great both ways as an expert in my niche I don’t have to waste time on reading through entry level fluff. As non expert in other fields I don’t get to be scolded for asking entry level questions so RTFM and LMGTFY will sink in history fortunately.

Unfortunately too many people make „tradecraft” into slacking excuse.

Too many people procrastinate pondering „what if’s”.

Tradecraft is not about meticulously gold plating everything as yet another huge group of people thinks or at least juniors.

I am kind of like of in the same place though roughly 5 years more than author.

I thought about going back to college, learning Math, Statistics, advanced Machine Learning and applying for research role at a frontier lab.

That's a super silly take. As much as I did math and even course on machine learning back in the days and I was making basic perceptron in code at university - to get back and be able to do so on frontier level that's years I don't have anymore.

Anthropic is doing all that also with their LLMs so that ship sailed.

Big thing is — business people are not going to spend time prompting LLM to make an application. If they do then they will become "programmers" and we all (experienced developers) know — you touch it you own it — they (business) will not bother running or taking responsibility.

Right now on r/sysadmin there was bunch of posts where admins have "vibe coded apps" requested to be "productionized". Those business types requesting don't know yet — you touch it you own it — they think they can vibe code app drop it at ops and it is all fun and games. When people will start requesting features, start nagging about bugs, start cursing on whatever changes they introduced it will be back to "hey maybe we will just get someone to do that for us".

You might not need as deep software dev knowledge but with deep software dev knowledge you still will be faster operating LLM to build systems than non-dev

But then you „design like software developers”.

What's wrong with a good cli?

My mum doesn't know how to use a cli.

Depends which agent you ask to cherry pick comments for sentiment analysis.

I take it….

Improvement over all the assholes that tell you „just google it” after you spent two days hitting the wall.

That’s what I find funny about „end of SaaS”.

If you are a graphic designer you are not going to make your own Photoshop. Even if you could ROI is not there.

Graphics designers of course are bad example because everyone will just generate images directly from LLMs.

But restaurant owner for example could build his own website with menu - heck even with just slapping html without LLM making a decent website was easy but these people didn’t have time for that.

I work in insurtech, wet dream of all big companies dealing with insurance was customer self service so they were building those interactive forms - but no customer wants to do the filling, they don’t care they don’t have time they are busy running their own business and they want to call or meet with someone who knows what needs to be filled in those forms. Chat with AI is not fixing that because business owner will have to spend his time answering all these questions that were in the form but only now it will be chatbot.
