Don't get the portable ones. I made the mistake in 2019 and the thing is abysmally loud, barely gets the temperature 2 degrees lower in a single room, uses twice as much electricity as the rest of the household combined, and you still can't work from the heat and noise. That's with a window replaced by an insulating panel with a round cut-out for the hose, not a cracked window like you see most people needing to do. I've compared about two dozen units in a spreadsheet and this one was clearly the best buy, so I don't think it's just my unit
I totally recommend airco but only the split units that actually provide relief. Still a lot of energy but I feel differently about that consumption when it's not mostly wasted
The mobile ones are nice to aim at you though, I'll give them that much. For the effect they give, you might nearly just as well run it outside (anywhere in the shade) and aim it at you. Then the noise also doesn't reflect off the walls so that's more bearable, too
Btw the split units, as a bonus, can usually also heat the room(s) they're in. The UK has quite a lot of (planned) wind power year round, so reducing gas consumption will also cut back on the fuels that are causing this
Sure, same here in Germany. Would make the property way more valuable, so a landlord should be thrilled about you wanting to put in that work and could find some arrangement where they need to pay for it only if they kick you out within X years for example
I'd never again move anywhere above ground floor without some form of cooling mechanism, though I've also always been more affected by heat than others seem to. I'll pay basically any premium for this. Currently very blessed with a naturally cool ground floor apartment. The cold in winter I can deal with using clothing, heating blankets, and of course some base heating level, that's all not so difficult nor expensive

The rumours/vibe are that there are security issues at are going to need responsibly patching before the 0-day exploits arrive. If this means implementing a broader AI contribution policy now, it seems practical.
The article doesn't say if the confidentiality labels were created with encryption. I've been using the latter (with Preview DLP) to prevent emails leaking out to _external_ integrations, which can't access the keys. With MS internal tooling, it's feasible that it access to the key, in which case that would be even worse. Does anyone know if this happened?
uno.uk have a policy of not censoring things unless they absolutely have to. they're supporters of the Open Rights Group, and they're the only residential isp I've found that give me a /29 ipv4 block on the standard order form.
they're a small outfit, been with them for years and on first name terms with the main support guy. great for the kind of nerds who prefer you to skip the flow chart if you and then the logs from your router and hint that you know what you're doing.
Agreed. I read the article and I was thinking "this sounds pretty bad", but after clicking through to the main site my experience was "there's no explanation of what this is, but it looks like it probably falls within the need for some form of regulation".
Are there services which offer a less... risky... service that are similarly affected here?
Lobste.rs is a tech-focused website quite similar to HN, and it's also affected (although they decided that the risks of legal action are low enough to avoid geoblocking UK users entirely).
Those can be "discontinuation effects" rather than lack of treatment. I'm not saying they aren't doing good for you, but it's important to bear in mind that acute symptoms from missing a dose can be a different thing.
Agreed. I've been frustrated by the proliferation in AI with technical support. Sometimes it's can't answer a question but thinks it can, so we go round and round in circles.
A couple have had a low threshold for "this didn't solve my answer" and directed me to a human, but others are impossible to escape.
On the other hand, I've had more success with a problem actually getting resolved by a chatbot without speaking to someone more recently... But not a lot more. Ususally I think that because I skew technical and treat Support as a last resort, I've tried everything it wants to suggest.
I didn't have a great experience. Perhaps load issues, or the HN hug of death?
I found that the AI kept cutting me off, and not leaving time in the conversation to respond. It would cut off utternances before the end and then answer the questions it had asked to me as if it had asked them. I think it could have gone on talking indefinitely.
Perhaps its audio was feeding back, but macs are pretty good with that. I'll try it with headphones next time.
they're trying to demo low-latency so they more-or-less have to be aggressive with cutting you off. that said, i think they're using filler to buy themselves a second or 2 - try a yes-or-no question
we dont use any fillers- we do some cool stuff with speculative responses though to drop a few milliseconds!
But yes- accuracy versus speed of interrupts is a tradeoff we're working on tuning. sorry to hear it was cutting you off. It could have been audio feedback or hug of death, but it shouldn't be talking over you.
