Really, you're going to go with "papers, please" ?

ICE is on record of requesting ID from _children_. I don't know if you're a parent, but my kids didn't carry ID until they were nearly adults. That's okay, though, because they're white. I don't like bringing race into this, but we're not seeing ICE ask white people for their passports.

I don't have a problem weeding out dangerous criminals, but flagging someone who had a parking ticket a decade ago is wrong. Additionally, removing TPS from groups and then subsequently deporting them up is wrong. Arresting individuals and deporting them when they are going through the proper legal avenues to become citizens is wrong.

How soon until other "undesirables" are targeted?

Did you carry proof of citizenship as a child? Do you carry it today? I don't, as my license is not a "real id" yet. They could scoop me up as I walk into Home Depot and send me off to god knows where tomorrow.

> Did you carry proof of citizenship as a child? Do you carry it today? I don't, as my license is not a "real id" yet.

Where I'm from, I am legally required to have proof of ID with me all the time. So basically used to never leaving home without it.

No, going back to what you're saying: why is it wrong to deport somebody that came to the US illegally? Just because they were good citizens is it OK to be forgiven for crossing the border illegally? How does that make any sense?

And speaking about TPS, you know what the T stands for, right?

> Where I'm from, I am legally required to have proof of ID with me all the time. So basically used to never leaving home without it.

Yes, I too have proof of ID. It does not prove that I am a citizen. I can also tell you that children in the USA do not carry ID.

> No, going back to what you're saying: why is it wrong to deport somebody that came to the US illegally?

If they were brought here as young children, yes, it's wrong -- they're being punished for the actions of their parents.

> And speaking about TPS, you know what the T stands for, right?

Of course. Let's look at Somalia, who recently had their temporary protected status designation revoked. Their home country is currently involved in a civil war, and the US government simultaneously lists Somalia as "Level 4: Do Not Travel". There's a good chance that we're sending these people to their deaths. You are okay with this?

> Yes, I too have proof of ID. It does not prove that I am a citizen. I can also tell you that children in the USA do not carry ID.

I guess here is the misunderstanding. I cannot get an ID without being a citizen.

Citizenship is a Federal thing, but our IDs are provided by the State.

You also didn't answer my question about us likely sending Somalis off to their deaths.

> You also didn't answer my question about us likely sending Somalis off to their deaths.

I did not answer it because it is a "might", not a certain thing. Also, take into account the fact that they knew it was a temporary thing when they came to the US. Now, knowing one possible outcome, they could emigrate to a third country that is willing to receive them.

You don't see the disparity over the state department saying "Do not go to Somalia, it is unsafe", yet also saying "The need for TPS has passed, it is safe to return to Somalia" ?

The State Department issues warnings for US citizens. It does not care if othet nationalities go there.

And speaking of it is safe to return there, I am not familiar with what happens when the TPS status is removed, but I think it only means they’re no longer welcome in the US, not necessarily being deported to Somalia the next day. So I don’t see any contradiction.

You're being obtuse.

Their TPS status was abruptly revoked and they were given two months to find another country to reside in or they will be deported to Somalia. Two months! Do you think that you could find another country to reside in and handle all of the legal arrangements within that short of a time frame?

I sincerely hope that you never find yourself in such a situation.

Everything that I learned about energy in Scotland comes from Still Game, so I must ask -- how many bars?

"One bar's plenty!"

"Victor, it's gratis, get the three bloody bars on."

3 bars? gonnae no dae that.

Put the bulb on. That suggests warmth.

It's fine, and it works. I have a Pixel, though, and there's no way to disable the google search box on the homescreen. I will never use the search box, yet it dominates a good portion of my screen.

I think the only reason not to use stock.. I guess once of the main reasons people look elsewhere. And I don't actually need fancy features.

Probably there are more annoyances, but I never get to those since the search just kills it quick.

Is there a way to disable "swipe right for news feed"? I hated that inclusion in the Pixel launcher.

Yeah it can be turned off in stock launcher (at least I did on my Pixel 9 Pro XL).

Isn't the stock one open-source? Even if it isn't, Java is really trivial to decompile reversibly, and removing features is much easier than adding. Take advantage of Android the way it was meant to be taken advantage of.

I hate that search box, it's ridiculous that they force it on users. On the plus side looking up how to get rid of it led me to Lawnchair which I have been happily using for many years at this point.

I switched to Smart Launcher Pro, and it seems to scratch the same itch. It was more expensive, though.

Nova carried me for almost a decade, and I'll miss it.

That's what I switched to as well after evaluating a half dozen or so other ones.

I agree, it's fine. It's missing a couple of niceties that I enjoyed with Nova, but nothing I can't live without.

They recently added a bottom dock option, and I was very happy to have that back.

Yes. Whatsapp requires a phone number and Discord does not. The tweens who do not have a phone yet can join Discord with their siblings / friends.

The other part of this is that Discord has official University hubs, so the college kids are all in there. You need an email address from that Univeristy to join: https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/4406046651927-...

Are you using the word tweens in some sense other than its usual definition of pre-teen? My understanding is that discord, like most online services, requires registered users to be 13 years old.

Nope, that's exactly what I meant. That requirement just means that they have to check a box which says that they're 13 or older. Surely no child would ever break the rules, right?

Having been out of university since before Discord was much of a thing, that's news to me. It also is eerily reminiscent of Facebook's beginning sign up requirements.

I guess that depends on the University and whether or not you get to keep your email address after you graduate. From what I understand from my college-aged kids, most people get kicked out of the hub after they graduate.

It's similar in Apple's strategy of trying to get Macintosh into the classrooms (in the 80s/90s), and student discounts on Adobe products.

I am not a huge fan of Discord, although I do use it. It's very good at what it does, and the communities it houses are well moderated, at least the ones that I have joined. I dislike that they've taken over communities and walled them off from the "searchable" internet.

That is actually something I quite like about Discord. Whatever I write and post, while not "private" is not indexed or searchable by anyone other tgan those people that have been vetted (invited) by the respective community. Not that I'm mostly on small friendgroup Discords with 10 - 100 members.

Right, and they're blending two things together -- group chats and public forums. I'm sad about losing the public forums.

Obviously this is slanted by tax credits, but the EV that I have shares a name with the existing gas model and was less expensive.

EVs aren't for everything, but mine fits my use case perfectly.

I'd be interested to hear which model, because that's pretty remarkable.

Equinox EV. Now that the tax credits have expired it is a different story.

The 2025 gas version's MSRP was about 30k, and the electric one was about 35k with a $7500 tax credit.

Ok, thanks. Current 2026 base trim prices are 29k for the ICE and 35k for the EV. If you told me GM was eating thinner unit margins on the EV version, I wouldn't be shocked either.

It's been a good car. Maintenance, so far, has been tire rotations and wiper fluid.

2019 prices, but it was $487 to move a receptacle from under a window to the left of the window prior to making that window opening a french door.

In 2025 it was $1,100 to have an EVSE put in, including permit fees.

I'm in Pennsylvania.

Working with my township to get a permit / inspection was horrible -- they dragged their feet for months!

I have to believe that I am one of a few people in my township who have done this the "right way".

Weird. I'm in PA, and my electrician quoted me a flat fee of $100 for replacing my outlets with GFCIs (each).

This wasn't replacing outlets, I do those myself. This was moving a receptacle four feet to the left and doing it through a finished basement.

Including drywall work? How many hours was the whole job?

Ha, they actually messed up a bit and I had to repair a bit of the wall / wainscoting. Because of this they knocked $100 off of the price that I listed earlier.

It took him maybe two hours to run the wire.

I don't know a single person on it either (USA), but it's not exactly something that people talk about. I am naturally quite thin, as is the rest of my family, but there's certainly no shortage of hefty people here.

It’s not just hefty people. Swimsuit season is a thing. A interesting metric would be gym memberships during the run up to summer. I expect they will be going down over time.

It's a little too late now, no?

I wonder if they fell into a sunk cost fallacy with their camera-based approach.

Probably yes, but time will tell.

Right now, their chinese OEM bought them and seems to be committed to keeping their robovacs alive.

It is my understanding that US availability of the top models (such as 705 combo) may be limited, so here is a german youtube channel that has a lot of reviews of their newer units and compares them to the old ones (usually the S9 or 980, as those are the best units when it comes to vacuuming): https://www.youtube.com/@frickhelm/videos

I'm guessing that the Chinese OEM bought them partially for the name itself, but mostly for their patents.

I have one, and specifically got one without a camera because I don't want that driving around my house. The first time it went through I made sure to stow cables and such, and I do a quick walk-through to make sure that none of the cats have barfed and that there's no obvious obstacles before I release the hypnodrone.

It still saves me time, which was the reason that I bought it in the first place.
