Big multi-disciplinary problems typically yield vast amounts of ancillary technology and solutions that may last generations... small sample fo things that either were invented for the Apollo program or became commercially viable:
Routing is pretty easy for most use cases... firewalling an Internet connection, on the other hand, is just about impossible (thanks TLS 1.3) without pretty serious overhead, 3rd party maintained live subscriptions, TLS interception, and a willingness to say "no" to a lot of the shenanigans that modern programs and devices try to pull.
I recommend the free home version of Sophos for the least painful way to do it. Buy a Palo Alto with a full subscription if you are really serious.
Exactly. The deal of all these platforms is that there is a fuckton of up-front costs. Hard drives. Networks. Peering. Transit. Operators. Payment. Lawyers. SREs. And so on and so forth.
The solution to this used to be that governments provide the platform. You would think this wouldn't be hard to do, since people have now shown that this can work and so it's a guaranteed money maker, or as close as you're going to get.
Yet I can't find a single initiative.
So any such rules will just make all internet platforms disappear ... and nothing.
The DOCSIS (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification) standard for cable internet end user routers specifies total remote control. Most ISP originated routers are set up this way.
The budget was signed Feb 3 this year to fund most of the govt (excepting DHS) through September 2026. ATC were not paid from Sept 30, 2025 until Feb 4, 2026. They receive back pay. They are also supposed to get a raise and funds set aside to hire 2500 more ATC but that is currently held up in the DHS funding fight.
